In celebration of World Environment Day, Bonayan, Bangladesh’s largest private afforestation programme, will distribute 5 million saplings nationwide.
This marks Bonayan’s 44th year of contributions to environmental restoration.
Facing severe impacts from climate change, such as cyclones, floods, and desertification, Bangladesh relies on trees to mitigate these effects. Bonayan, active for over four decades, is crucial in these efforts.
World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is a key event for environmental action worldwide. In line with the Bangladesh Government's climate strategy, Bonayan has prepared 5 million saplings across 19 nurseries, supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #15, which aims to increase tree-covered land to 25% by 2030.
Ahmed Raihan Ahsanullah, Bonayan's spokesperson, emphasized the importance of a united approach to environmental stewardship: “World Environment Day reminds us of our duty to the planet. This year, we are distributing 5 million saplings, reaffirming our commitment to a sustainable future. We are proud to collaborate with the government to enhance afforestation efforts and aim to achieve a 25% land-to-tree ratio.”
Since its inception in 1980, Bonayan has distributed 125 million saplings and established 119 medicinal corners nationwide. Currently operating in 24 districts, Bonayan has earned numerous accolades, including the Prime Minister’s National Award, SDG Brand Championship Award 2023, and the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award for Green Leadership.
Bonayan will continue partnering with stakeholders, including government bodies and private organizations, to enhance its efforts for a greener, sustainable future.
