BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been kept under close observation of physicians at Evercare Hospital in the capital for various ailments, according to her personal physician Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.

“Madam Khaleda Zia is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital due to sickness and at one stage, she was shifted to the CCU due to deterioration of her overall condition including liver, kidney, heart and lung functions. But now she is under close observation of the medical board,” he said while talking to UNB.

Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep concern over the health condition of Khaleda Zia.

“Khaleda Zia is not out of crisis and she needs advanced treatment, which is not possible in the country. Our request to the government is to send Khaleda abroad after releasing her immediately otherwise, the government should take all responsibility,” Fakhrul said, while speaking at a press briefing held at BNP’s Gulshan office on Monday afternoon.

Sharmila Rahman Shinthi, wife of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's late son Aarafat Rahman Koko has been staying with her at the hospital while Kahleda’s sister Selima Islam, brother Shamim Iskandar, Kanij Fatema are inquiring about her health condition round the clock.

The BNP chief was admitted to the hospital on August 9 as she fell sick. She was shifted to the CCU on Sunday night as per the recommendation of the medical board. Later, she was again shifted to the cabin from CCU on Monday morning.

Dr Zahid, said the medical board in its recommendation said she urgently needs a liver transplant at a modern multidisciplinary medical center abroad.

The 78-year-old former prime minister has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung, heart, and eye problems.

Since her conditional release in 2020, the BNP chief has been receiving treatment at the hospital under a medical board headed by cardiologist Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.

Khaleda was sent to the Old Dhaka Jail after a lower court sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018. Later, she was found guilty in another corruption case the same year.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, the government temporarily freed Khaleda Zia from jail through an executive order suspending her sentence on March 25, 2020, with the condition that she stay in her Gulshan house and not leave the country.
