Rahmanullah Gurbaz's impressive 80, accompanied by Ikram Alikhil's solid 58, guided Afghanistan to a total of 284 while batting first against England in the ICC World Cup on Sunday in Delhi.
This now stands as the second-highest team total by Afghanistan in World Cup history.
Having won the toss, England opted to put Afghanistan into bat. Afghanistan got off to a promising start thanks to the careful approach of Rahmanullah and Ibrahim Zadran.
Within 16.4 overs, Afghanistan amassed 114 runs for their first wicket partnership shared by Rahmanullah and Ibrahim.
Adil Rashid broke the partnership. Following this dismissal, Afghanistan experienced wickets fall in quick succession, putting them under pressure.
However, Rahmanullah held his ground at the crease, resilient against the current world champions. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman also made valuable contributions, scoring 23 and 28 respectively.
Adil Rashid was the standout bowler for England, taking three wickets while conceding 42 runs in 10 overs, while Mark Wood secured two wickets.
Heading into this match, both England and Afghanistan had played two matches each. England began with a defeat against India, but then staged a comeback against Bangladesh. Afghanistan, on the other hand, suffered a loss to Bangladesh and fell to India in their second match.
