The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is selling Turkish onions at just Tk15 per kg in Sylhet city. But people are showing little interest in it.

India's decision to lift a ban on onion exports from January 1 may have provided some relief to Bangladeshi consumers but has led to a wave of anger among importers.

India withdrew its ban on onion export on Monday, nearly three and a half months after imposing it abruptly which sent the commodity's price through the roof in Bangladesh.   Bangladesh will resume onion import through Dinajpur’s Hili land port on January 1 next, officials here said.   The decision was announced through a notification from India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The people are heaving a sigh of relief as the price of onion has fallen with the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) offering the item at Tk 23 per kg through e-commerce companies.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Thursday said that government will fixed retail price of potatoes with within next two and three days.

In the wake of the repeated crisis of onions, Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque on Wednesday directed the researchers, scientists and officials concerned to adopt a specific action plan for Bangladesh to become self-sufficient in onion production.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh on Sunday started selling onions at Taka 36 per kg through e-commerce companies to prevent onion price hike while also keeping the essential bulb within reach for the middle class.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday said that there is no need to panic over onion price as there is adequate stock.

The government has decided to import onion from multiple sources to ensure enough supply of the popular cooking ingredient in the local markets.
