In recent years, Bangladeshi applicants have been able to register for IELTS online. This article presents a step-by-step guideline for registering for the IELTS exam.
Things You Need to Know Before the Registration
In Bangladesh, the IELTS exam is administered by the British Council and IDP Education. Both organizations operate multiple centers across all divisional cities in the country, where candidates can register in person to participate in the tests. Examinations for different modules are scheduled on specific dates each month.
The IELTS exam is offered in two categories: academic and general training (GT), with the registration process tailored according to the selected category. The academic option is designed for those pursuing higher education, while the GT category is intended for individuals seeking immigration or job opportunities.

This test can be taken either on a computer or using the traditional paper-based method. Computer-based test results are typically available within 3 to 5 days, whereas paper-based results may take approximately two weeks.
For registration, only a National Identity Card (NID) and a valid passport are required. Regardless of the test type or format, the current registration fee is BDT 22,500.
Step-by-Step IELTS Test Registration Procedure
IELTS Registration in the British Council
Step 1 | Account Creation on ‘Test Taker Portal’
First, create an account on the ‘Test Taker Portal’ at the link https://eamidentity.britishcouncil.org/account/login. This step requires the candidate's name, date of birth, and email address. Complete the account setup by creating a unique password and agreeing to the registration terms.

An account on this portal allows the candidate to complete the process at different times if needed. Additionally, the portal facilitates later access to IELTS scores and the ability to send a ‘Test Report Form’ to universities.
Step 2 | Test Category Selection
After logging in to the account, select ‘Book New Test’ from the top left corner. Choose the test category, either academic or general training, and then select the test format- either paper-based or computer-based.
Candidates with accessibility requirements can choose from options such as scribes, assistive technologies, or hearing assistive devices.

Next, choose the date, venue, and time for the exam based on availability. Confirm the selection by clicking ‘Book Test’.
Step 3 | Providing Necessary Information and Documents

That is changing or updating information on the Bangladesh passport. Whether it’s the marital status or a change of personal information, there is a strict process in place for the change. Here’s how it’s done.
Passport Information Update Process
In a broad sense, the information update process is the same as applying for a new Bangladesh passport or passport renewal. There is no way to update the information in an existing valid passport whether it is MRP or e-Passport. So essentially, a person will have to apply for a passport re-issuance.
Fortunately, the passport authority of Bangladesh has streamlined the process under one system. Whether it is an application for a new passport, passport renewal, error correction, or information update, it all starts from the E-Passport Portal.

Now the information correction procedure for both MRP and e-Passport requires a hybrid modality. That means, a person will have to apply online as well as visit the regional passport office for a scheduled appointment.
How to Locate a Local Passport Office
Assuming the application is for an information update, there should already be an application account made for a new passport or passport renewal. Head over to the e-Passport portal and use the login credentials to start the application process.
Fortunately for the applicants, there is no need to physically locate the regional passport office. The first step of the application will ask about location information. Based on the provided information, the e-Passport portal will select the regional passport office for the applicant.

As global tourism finally normalizes after the pandemic, there is a natural rush for travel abroad, and Bangladeshis are no different. Now is the time to check where Bangladeshi passport holders can travel visa-free, or with visa on arrival, or with an eTA. Here’s a detailed list.
Bangladeshi Passport and its Types
Bangladeshi passport has historically not had a very good global score since independence. According to the Henley Passport Index for 2023, Bangladesh ranks 99th globally with a mobility score of 40. The mobility score estimates that with a Bangladeshi passport, a person will have a world reach of about 24% which is significantly lower than a lot of countries.
These rankings apply to the ordinary Bangladeshi passports only. There are a total of three types of passports active in Bangladesh. These are:
Ordinary Passport
The ordinary passport is issued to any general civilian with Bangladeshi citizenship. The right to a passport has been promulgated in the constitution, and any legal citizen of the country can avail the service for personal use such as study trips, medical needs, vacations, or business trips.

Official Passport
The official passport of Bangladesh is issued to government employees of the state. The passport is issued as a special designation for individuals representing Bangladesh in any kind of official capacity. The features of the official passport are similar to those of the ordinary passport. Except in certain cases, many visa requirements in different countries are waived for official passport holders. A person holding an official passport will also need to have an NOC from their respective government authority before traveling.

Bangladeshi Passport Renewal Process for Expatriates Living Abroad
Currently, the Bangladesh passport application and renewal processes are quite simple. Like the locals, the Bangladeshi expatriates are also benefitting from the centralized hybrid application system. In this article, we will take a look at how can Bangladeshi expatriates residing in a foreign country apply for passport renewal.
Passport Renewal: MRP to E-passport
Assuming that the expatriate is already residing in a foreign country, and s/he already has a passport. Handwritten passports were last issued in 2010, with MRP replacing them in the same year. As an expatriate, you are most likely to hold an MRP because each passport has a maximum validity of 10 years.
Now the question is, should the expatriate renew his or her MRP to MRP or e-passport? For local applications, the government has stopped issuing the MRP, with e-passports being available at every regional passport office in Bangladesh. As a result, there is no longer scope for MRP-to-MRP renewal.
For expatriates, if the Bangladesh mission abroad - where the expatriate is currently residing - supports e-passports, then s/he should go for the e-passport renewal option.
However, e-passport is still not available at every Bangladeshi mission abroad. In that case, if the embassy doesn’t support e-passports, then the expatriates can go for the MRP option.

Step-by-Step Process of Bangladesh Passport Renewal Application
The application process for renewing a Bangladesh passport is a hybrid one. The Bangladeshi expatriate needs to fill out an online application form and then make an appointment with the relevant Bangladeshi mission in the expatriate's country of residence. In case there is no Bangladeshi mission, the application will be handled by a partnering mission in Bangladesh.
A detailed outline of the online application can be found in our passport renewal process article. But since there are some key changes in information input, we will cover the steps again.
Step 1: Location Registration
The first thing to do is to visit the online passport application portal. Here the Bangladeshi expatriate needs to register an account. But before that, the expatriate needs to fill out some basic information regarding the passport.
On the prompt “Are you applying from Bangladesh?”, the Bangladeshi expatriate needs to select “No.” After that, the expatriate will have to select the country of his or her current residence. From there, the relevant Bangladeshi mission or a partnering mission will be selected automatically, which will process the passport renewal application.

Step 2: Account Registration
The second step is to register an account on the e-passport web portal using your e-mail. Here the expatriate has to input his/her name and e-mail address. Here the expatriate should make sure that the given name and surname match his or her existing passport/NID/BRC. The expatriate will also need to input his/ her contact details here.
After that, an activation e-mail will be sent to your registered mail. From there, the expatriate will be able to start the application process.
Step 3: Form Fill-Up
The next step is a long one. This is also the step where the Bangladeshi expatriate needs to be most careful as the expatriate will have to correctly input a lot of information. Here’s what the expatriate will need to fill up.
Personal Credentials
The first section is related to personal credentials. Here the expatriate will outline all his or her information step by step. The applicant must make sure that the information she or he provides is in line with the NID/BRC information.
The expatriate will also need to specify the country of birth if she or he was born outside of Bangladesh. You will also need to outline the means of your nationality (eg. By birth or by naturalization).

Address Information
The next step is to input address details. There are two distinct parts here, permanent and present address.
If the applicant is a Bangladeshi by birth, then the expatriate will need to input a permanent residence address in Bangladesh. The present address should be the expatriate's current location from where she or he is applying for renewal.
Passport Information
In this step, the expatriate will need to provide details of his or her NID/BRC as well as the existing passport. You will also need to select why you are applying for a new passport. In this case, you will need to select either “expired” or “e-passport conversion”.
Parental and Spouse Information
In the next step, the expatriate will need to provide his or her parental information. This is a highly detailed section where you will need to fill out their personal details, address, and profession.
If the expatriate is married, then s/he will also need to input the same information for your spouse.

Emergency Contact
The Bangladeshi expatriate will need to set an emergency contact as well. It is better to select someone from the same country the expatriate resides in. The first step is to select the relationship the expatriate shares with that person. After that, the expatriate will have to fill out their details in the same way as parental information.
After all the information has been correctly input, the expatriate will need to submit the application and pay the application fee.
Passport Fee and pages
The new e-passport is available in either 48 or 64 pages. The Bangladeshi expatriate will also get two validity options at either 5 or 10 years. The fee structure for expatriates varies depending on the location of the expatriate.
Appointment at Mission
After completing the online application and fee payment, the Bangladeshi expatriate will need to download the application form and the application summary. Both these pdf documents can be found on your applicant’s dashboard.
After that, the expatriate will need to schedule an appointment with your designated mission for biometric verification. The expatriate should make sure to take the two printed documents with him or her for verification purposes.

e-Passport Information Correction: What’s Changed?
Recently the government has made a couple of changes to the information correction process of the passport. In addition to the online application, users will need to download two forms and fill them up by hand.
They are Application Form for Information Change on Passport and a Commitment Form (অঙ্গীকারনামা). According to the new regulation, in addition to the online application, you will also need to submit these two forms by downloading and filling them up. So what are these exactly?
Form For Information Change
Now you might be thinking why do you need to fill out another information change form if you are already applying online? This step has been added to double-check the information with the new application information.
In this form, you will need to input the wrong information in your passport and the changeable/correct information side by side. This allows for easy cross-referencing of the information.
Commitment Form
The commitment form is similar to an oath where you certify that you in your sane mind and knowledge, are requesting a change of information that is in line with your correct personal information.
The commitment form was introduced to defer fraudulent claims on information change and identity theft.

Do I have to pay the entire passport fee again?
The passport correction process essentially requires a new passport to be issued for you. It’s not like the existing passport will be taken and corrected. As a result, you will need to pay the full amount for your passport information correction as it will essentially be a reissue.

How to Correct Errors of e-Passport Online Application Form Before Submission
The application is divided into several steps and each step is individually saved. So if you notice any information correction before the final submission, you can simply press on the edit option and make the correction where necessary. You will be able to make corrections as many times as you want before the final submission.

How to Correct Information of e-Passport Application After Submission of the Form
If you notice any information correction after the submission of the application, things will become a bit tricky. First, you will need to download the application form or summary. After that, you will need to go to the regional passport office with the summary and additional official documents that verify the correct information.
The enrolment officer at the passport office will consider your case and cross-check with the official documents. They will be able to correct the information on the server without any extra charge.
How to Delete the Information Correction Application before and After Submission You will not have to delete any application that hasn’t been submitted for processing. In the case of unsubmitted applications, it gets automatically deleted after 200 days.
But if you have submitted and paid the fee, then you will need to contact the PRO section of the regional passport office to fix the problem.

Bangladeshi passport’s ranking improves in 2023, still behind Iran and Sri Lanka as per Henley Index
The 2023 edition of the Henley Passport Index – the most widely-accepted rating of global travel documents – places Bangladesh’s passport at 101st position, up three places from last year.
The latest edition of the Passport Index features a total of 109 spots with some countries’ passports sharing the same ranking. Bangladesh shares the 101st position with Kosovo. In 2022, Bangladesh ranked 104th.
Interestingly enough, passports of heavily sanctioned Iran, economically devastated Lebanon and Sri Lanka, and conflict-ridden Sudan have fared better compared to that of Bangladesh – at 99th and 100th (shared) positions respectively.

According to the 2023 Henley Passport Index, a Bangladeshi passport entitles visa-free travel to 41 destinations.
In South Asia, Bangladeshi passport is in a better position compared to those of Nepal (at 103), Pakistan (106) and Afghanistan (109). At 61, Maldives’ passport is in the best position in the region. Indian passport ranks at 85 and Bhutan’s at 90.
The top 5 ranking passports according to the Henley Index are: Japan at 1, allowing citizens visa-free access to 193 destinations; Singapore and South Korea at 2; Germany and Spain sharing the 3rd spot; Finland, Italy, Luxembourg at 4; and Austria, Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden at 5.

The bottom 5 ranking passports as per the index are: Afghanistan at 109, Iraq at 108, Syria at 107, Pakistan at 106 and Yemen at 105.
The Henley Passport Index, the only one of its kind based on unique data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), has historical data going back 18 years. The database lists 227 travel destinations and 199 passports.
The index is updated every quarter, and is regarded as the go-to resource for global citizens and sovereign states for determining where a passport ranks on the scale of global mobility.

Travelling 100 countries with the 9th weakest passport in the world
Maliha Fairooz, or “Maliha Around the World” as her travel blog is called, has been exploring the world on her own with a Bangladeshi passport. She promotes travel culture among Bangladeshi youth by sharing her experiences on her blog.
On November 25, 2022, Maliha reached her 100th country – the Republic of Ghana. On the occasion, she made a long post on her Facebook page, recounting the challenges, joys and discrimination she experienced while travelling as a “brown, Muslim, Bangladeshi woman”.

Joint working group to resolve passport renewal issues of Bangladeshis living in Saudi
Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia on Sunday agreed to form a joint working group to resolve the issue of Bangladeshis living in Saudia Arabia whose passports require renewal.
The issue was raised when visiting Deputy Minister of Interior of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dr Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Dawood called on the PM at her official residence Ganabhaban.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

The Saudi Deputy Minister raised the issue of Bangladeshis with expired passports living in the Kingdom.
He also proposed the formation of a joint working group to address the issue.
The Prime Minister agreed on the proposal and instructed concerned officials to form a joint working group.
PM’s press secretary also said that various issues related to bilateral interest came up for discussion during the talks.
He said, Dr Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Dawood thanked the Prime Minister for Bangladesh’s support to Saudi Arabia in multilateral fora on the issue of its expo scheduled for 2030.
The Saudi Deputy Minister congratulated the Prime Minister on 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence and 100th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He also lauded for the impressive development of Bangladesh over the last decade under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister referred to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war and said that these have created obstacles to the economic progress of countries in the world.
She also sought Saudi cooperation to resolve the Rohingya issue.
Sheikh Hasina conveyed good wishes for the custodian of the two holy mosques and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the crown prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.
PM's Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin, PM's Principal Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Bangladeshi Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Dr Javed Patwary and Ambassador of the Saudi Arabia Essa Yousef Essa Alduhailan, were present, among others.

Manikganj: Rohingya teen trying to get passport on fake documents held
A 16-year-old Rohingya girl was arrested while she was trying to get a Bangladeshi passport using a fake identity from the Manikganj regional passport office, police said.
The Myanmar national was identified as Humayra.
Abu Taher, 22, from Chakoria upazila of Cox's Bazar, who was aiding Humayra in getting her fake passport, was also arrested.
They went to the passport office to apply for a passport for Humayra under the name of Bangladesh national Tasnim Begum from Singair upazila. Humayra and Taher provided all the necessary documents, including a birth certificate.
The staff of the passport office got suspicious about them after Humayra's fingerprint showed that she was registered as a Rohingya national, said Nahid Newaz, assistant director of the passport office.
Abdur Rauf Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station, said: "Two Rohingyas were handed over to us by the passport office. We arrested Humayra and Taher after the office lodged a complaint against them."
"During questioning, Humayra said, with the help of Taher, she made a deal of Tk1 lakh with someone called Ershad from Singair upazila to help her procure the documents required for making a Bangladeshi passport," Rauf added.
