A pair of chicken costs Tk 70,000!
Faisal Ahmed Shuvo, a college student from a remote village in Bagerhat, has become an inspiration for many unemployed youths in the area for his success in farming of 25 foreign chicken breeds.
Inspired by his success, other youths are seeking advice on starting their own farms. A pair of American Wyandotte Splash chickens of his farm is now selling at Tk 70,000.
Shuvo, an Honours second-year student from Malliker Ber village in Rampal Upazila, started his experimental foreign chicken breeds farming in 2019 after watching YouTube videos.
He borrowed Tk 3,400 from his father and bought four European Silkie chickens. Over time, he acquired more foreign chickens, turning his hobby into a source of income.
His farm, Shuvo Agro, now earns him Tk 500,000 to 600,000 annually.
In addition to European Silkie chickens, his farm now has 200 to 300 foreign chickens of 25 species including European Brahma, Silkie, Hamburg, Silver, Brahma, Cosmo, Fighter, Ringneck, Buff Polish Cap Frizzle, White Polish Cap, Bantam, Wyandotte, Sebright, and other species. He has also installed an incubator machine for hatching eggs.

Faisal said, "I had a hobby of raising chickens. In 2019, I bought four European Silkie chickens with 3,400 Taka from my father after watching YouTube videos. Once they started laying eggs, I never looked back. Now, I have at least 25 species of foreign chickens and sell chicks online through social media, especially Facebook. I couldn't have achieved this without my family's support."
He said that his farm's annual income is Tk 6 lakh with the most expensive pair of Wyandotte Splash chickens costing a pair Tk 60,000 to 70,000 .
The farm also houses the world's smallest bird species, the King Quail, originating from Asia and Australia, with a pair priced between Tk 8,000 and Tk 10,000.
He sells chicks hatched from eggs, with one to ten-day-old chicks costing Tk 1,000 to 1,200 per pair, and fully grown chickens priced between Tk 20,000 and Tk 70,000 per pair, said Shuvo.
He has sold chickens in 55 districts including Bagerhat, Khulna, Barishal, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Cumilla.
Inspired by Faisal, many unemployed youths have started their own foreign chicken farms.
Visitor Soikat Sheikh said, "I saw these chickens on YouTube, and now I can see them in person. It feels great."

Another visitor, Robiul Islam, said, "As a young entrepreneur, I want to start a foreign chicken farm, so I came to see Shuvo's farm. I saw many species of foreign chickens and was very impressed."
Faisal's father, Saiful Islam, said, "Shuvo is an example of how one can earn money without chasing jobs. He achieved what we couldn't in our time, thanks to the internet."
Bagerhat District Livestock Officer Mohammad Saheb Ali said, "I have heard about Faisal Ahmed Shuvo's foreign chicken farm, which has about 25 species from various countries. The district livestock office is keen on supporting such young entrepreneurs in every possible way."

Prospects of Safe Broiler Chicken Farming
In the ever-evolving food industry, broiler chicken is one of the most popular preferences. This article delves into the subject of safe broiler chicken, a key issue in the future of the poultry industry. Let's find out how this chicken farming system plays an essential role in the food industry.
What is Safe Broiler Chicken?
The misuse of antibiotics in broiler farming has surfaced as a global public health menace, propelling the surge in popularity of antibiotic-free broiler meat production on a global scale. In this paradigm shift, emphasis is placed on alternative methods in broiler production in Bangladesh as well.
The safe broiler system prioritizes animal health, a conducive environment, and high product quality. This approach emphasizes the absence of hazardous ingredients, including antibiotics and growth hormones. It fosters a bio-preservative system and incorporates herbal supplements in animal feed.
The result is poultry reared in an eco-friendly manner, embodying the essence of safety and health consciousness in every aspect of production. Consumers increasingly seek assurance in their food choices. Meanwhile, the emergence of these chickens heralds a positive shift towards sustainable, health-centric practices in the poultry industry.

Recent Advances in Broiler Breeding
Md. Shafiqul Islam, a professor in the pharmacology department at Bangladesh Agricultural University, and his associate Md. Abu Raihan Parvez has recently achieved breakthrough success in alternative broiler production. They were able to produce broilers without any form of antibacterial agents, using different types of herbal plant extracts in their laboratory.
In their research on broilers, they predominantly utilized various types of herbal extracts, noting their superior efficacy compared to antibiotics. The broilers exhibited significant weight gain, and this increase was notably rapid.
Moreover, the rate of morbidity and mortality among them was remarkably low. This research program, spanning five years, holds the potential for a significant leap toward the development of a more advanced poultry industry if implemented on a large scale.

‘Eat chicken feet’: Egypt’s govt recommendation faces vehement criticism from citizens
A recommendation from Egypt’s government – to eat chicken feet – has come under vehement criticism from the country’s citizens.
Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world, is currently experiencing a record currency crisis and the highest inflation in five years, which has made food so costly that many Egyptians are no longer able to purchase chicken, a staple item.
The most recent dietary advice from the state recommended preparing chicken feet, a protein-rich part of the bird that is often kept for dogs and cats, according to a BBC report published yesterday.
Egypt is one of the countries suffering the most from skyrocketing inflation, which surpassed 30 percent in March.

Cooking oil and cheese, which were once reasonable necessities for many, have become unaffordable luxuries. Some product prices have doubled or tripled within a matter of months.
The BBC report quoted Wedad, a mother of three in her 60s, as saying: “I eat meat once a month, or I don’t buy it at all. I buy chicken once a week.”
Egypt is under a lot of strain in part because it relies significantly on imported food rather than homegrown agriculture to support its over 100 million-strong population.
Even the grain used to feed the chicken is imported.

In comparison to the US dollar, the Egyptian pound lost half of its value over the course of a year. As the government depreciated the currency once more in January, the price of imports such as grain rose dramatically.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi frequently attributes his country's present economic troubles on the chaos that preceded the 2011 Egyptian revolt and fast population growth. In addition, he mentions the epidemic that followed the conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine had a devastating effect on Egyptian economy. Egypt is the second largest wheat importer in the world, and the two countries were its principal suppliers. As a result of the disruption of exports due to the war, price of wheat and bread skyrocketed.
Russian and Ukrainian tourists used to visit Egypt in droves; the tourism industry has also suffered financial losses. Tourism, which used to account for around 5% of Egypt’s GDP, has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Egypt has requested a bailout from the International Monetary Fund four times in the previous six years due to its economic difficulties. These debts, which account for 90% of GDP, consume nearly half of the state’s revenues.
Gulf nations such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have purchased state assets and are aiding Egypt, but they have also toughened their requirements for future investments.

Broiler chicken price has increased to Tk 20,200 from Tk 12,000-13,000 per quintal (100 kg) at farms in Dhamrai, Nawabganj, Savar, Tangail, Sirajganj, Narshingdi, and other hubs countrywide during the period, he added.

Beef was selling at Tk 750 to 800, while mutton was selling at Tk950 to 1100 in Dhaka on Friday.
Rashedul Haque, a private job holder, went to Karwan Bazar kitchen market for weekly procurement of chicken, meat, and fish items. But he returned with half of the basket as the money allocated for this purpose finished quickly.
He told UNB in an irritated voice that he has to reduce 50 percent of chicken and meat consumption due to the lack of a cap on the price of these items.
Rashedul blamed the failure of proper market monitoring on overpricing the chicken, meat, fish, and egg as the prices of these items went up every week.
