Barishal University student found dead in her mess room
A first year student of Barishal University (BU) was found dead in her room at a mess on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Ribna Shahrin, first-year student of Botany Department and resident of Molla Chhatri Nibas (Rokeya hall), near the university. She hailed from Pirojpur district and used to live alone.
BU Proctor Dr Md Khorshed Alam, said the girl had a conversation with her family members and friends on July 16 and since then they failed to reach her over the phone.

At 11 pm on Wednesday, the panicked mother and uncle of the girl rushed to the mess and found the door of the room closed from inside.
Getting no response from inside the room after a long time, they broke into the door and found Ribna’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.

Narail teacher suspended for physically harassing female student
An assistant teacher of a secondary high school in Sadar upazila of the district has been temporarily suspended for physically harassing a female student.
Locals, guardians and civil society formed a human chain and staged a broom procession in front of the school on Tularam-Sheikhhati road demanding the suspension, as well as exemplary punishment for the accused teacher, forcing the authorities to act on Tuesday.

Speakers included Assistant Prof Ramesh Chandra Adhikary, Awami League leaders Asim Kumar Pal and Biproda Proshanna Mallick, and former health officer Sudir Kumar Pal.
They alleged that the accused teacher, Sukanta Kumar Goswami, had been physically harassing and teasing female students in the name of teaching.
In the afternoon of January 18, the teacher called a female student to an isolated room on the first floor of the school and harassed her physically.
Later, the victim shared the matter with her friends and mother.
Goswami again harassed her on the pretext of dropping her home when she was returning after getting vaccinated for Covid-19.
The now disgraced teacher even threatened to make her fail in her exams when she raised her voice against the incidents.
Rabindranath Mandal, headmaster of the school, said her mother filed a complaint in writing against the teacher on January 22.
Later, the issue was informed to Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Upazila Education officer, he said.
Headmaster Mandal said a five-member committee headed by the School Managing Committee’s Member Ratan Bhowmick was formed and asked to submit its report within seven working days.

Necessary measures will be taken in this connection after getting the report, he said, adding that Goswami was temporarily suspended.
UNB managed to reach Goswami, who defended himself by saying that his opponents had hatched a conspiracy to disgrace him socially. He denied any involvement in the alleged incidents.

IU student found dead in Meherpur
A female student of Islamic University (IU) was found dead at her parents-in-law's residence in the Kathuli Mor area of Meherpur's Gangni upazila on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Tasnim Jahan Urmi, a fourth-year student of the folklore studies department of IU.

According to the woman's father, Tasnim got married to Ashrafuzzaman Prince more than four years ago. But her husband, a drug addict, often used to torture her.
Neighbours found Tasnim’s body hanging from the ceiling of her room around 10pm.
Later, she was taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead on arrival, said Abdur Razzaque, officer-in-charge of Gangni police station.
Golam Kibriya, Tasnim’s father, said that Prince’s father informed him about her death on Thursday night. "He told us that my daughter was taken to the health complex as she fell sick."

"He told us that my daughter ended her life at the medical facility. We found several injury marks on her body that proved that she was toutured to death," he said.
“The body has been sent for an autopsy," said OC Abdur. "Prince is on the run. Legal action will be taken against him if he's involved in any foul play," he added.

RU student ‘sexually assaulted’ in town, case filed
A third-year female student of Rajshahi University filed a case on Wednesday afternoon at the city's Boalia Model Police Station claiming she was sexually assaulted at Bashar Road in the Tikapara area of Rajshahi city.
The incident happened on Tuesday morning while she was heading into town for tuition.
Earlier, the victim student lodged a written complaint on Tuesday with the proctor's office of the university in this regard.
The written statement said that a stranger suddenly grasped her from the back, and touched her private parts at Bashar Road in Tikapara area of the city.
The stranger left her when she started screaming, she stated.
In the written statement, the victim student demanded the punishment of the accused and wanted her own safety.
The victim said, “I don't know him personally, but he seemed to be a local. I can clearly identify the man.”
Proctor Professor Ashabul Haque said, “We have already instructed an assistant proctor to assist the victim.”
While contacted, Majharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Boalia Model Police Station, said, “I don’t want to say anything in this regard because of victim’s safety issues.”

BM College female student complains against BCL activist for assault
A female student of Government Brojmohun College in Barishal on Monday lodged a complaint at a police station and to college authority against a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist for beating and threatening her.
The incident occurred around Sunday evening in front of the main gate of the BM College, according to the girl who is a second year student of the college.
The female student said she had been frequently eve-teased by the accused BCL activist Nujaim Islam Shawon, a student of Syed Hatem Ali College after refusing his proposal for a romantic relationship a year ago.

He often used to threaten her acquaintances in this regard, the girl said.
On Sunday, Nujaim obstructed her in front of the college and beat her up and at one point the girl’s cell phone broke, falling from her hand, she said in her complaint.
Accused Nujaim threatened that if she disclosed about this assault to anyone his associate Sagor, another BM college student will not let her enter the college in future.
“We have received a complaint against Nujaim and Sagor over the incident on Monday afternoon,” said Azimul Karim , Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali model police station.
The investigation is on and the accused will soon be brought under law, he said.
Dr Mommad Golam Kibria, principal of BM College said they have received a written complaint from the student.
“A three-member probe body has been formed to look into the matter. Action will be taken immediately after receiving the report,” he said.
