Police have recovered an abandoned grenade during drain excavation work in the Boro Kamalabari Paschimpara area of Kamalabari Union in Aditmari Upazila of Lalmonirhat.
Local resident Abdul Aziz, 75, discovered the grenade while cleaning the drain beside his house on Thursday afternoon. He later informed his neighbours, who, becoming suspicious, alerted the Aditmari police station.
Police recovered the grenade and took it to the station.
“At first, I was suspicious when I saw the object while digging. Later, I realised it looked like a grenade. Freedom fighters used to take positions in this area during the 1971 Liberation War. It could be a grenade left behind at that time,” Aziz said.
Ali Akbar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Aditmari Police Station, said the grenade is initially believed to be from the Liberation War period and has been kept safely at the police station.
“It will be deactivated following the rules,” he added.
A general diary (GD) has been filed in this regard.
