Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB-Teesta Battalion) has urged the media and local residents of Lalmonirhat to help prevent rumours and smuggling along the district’s border areas, stressing that community cooperation is vital for strengthening border security.

Brigadier General ASM Naser, Region Commander of the North-West Region (BGB), made the request at the inauguration ceremony of the new Chaturbari BOP camp in Patgram upazila on Thursday.

Commander Naser said some groups are spreading rumours and creating confusion at the border.

He, however, appreciated the media’s role in countering such misinformation and requested continued support in preventing false news in the future.

He emphasised that the BGB is working tirelessly to secure the country’s borders and prevent smuggling.

Colonel SM Shafiqur Rahman, Rangpur Sector Commander, and Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Musahid Masum, 61 BGB Battalion Commander, also present.

The Region Commander inaugurated the Chaturbari BOP, located between Dhabolguri and Kharijajongra BOPs, and planted a sapling at the new camp.

Other senior BGB officials and local dignitaries were also present at the event.

According to BGB sources, the Teesta Battalion is responsible for protecting about 200 kilometers of Bangladesh’s north-western border.

Its duties include border surveillance, preventing smuggling, deterring illegal infiltration, and maintaining overall security along this section of the international border in Lalmonirhat.

However, the large distance between two existing BOPs under the battalion—Dhabolguri and Kharijajongra—has created an operational gap.

The new Chaturbari BOP has been established to bridge this gap and strengthen measures against smuggling, drug trafficking, women and child trafficking, and illegal border crossings.
