River police have recovered the body of a man suspected to be the son of late actor ATM Shamsuzzaman from the Jayanti River in the Nazirpur union of Muladi upazila of Barishal.
Locals found the body floating in the river near Natirhat area of Nazirpur union of the upazila on Monday afternoon, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman, in-charge of Nazirpur River Police Outpost in Muladi upazila.

Police identified the deceased as ATM Khalekuzzaman (46), based on the national identity card found in his pocket.
“Even though the father's name on the NID card and the address suggest that the deceased may be the son of the renowned actor ATM Shamsuzzaman, we cannot confirm anything definitively until his family members identify the body," said Habibur.

Quoting relatives, Muladi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman said Khalekuzzaman left his Dhaka home on October 24 to visit a relative's house in Khulna.
“On October 26, Khalekuzzaman's mother made a call on his mobile phone, and the line was cut from the other side. Since then, Khalekuzzaman's mobile phone has been switched off,” said the OC.
Initially, police suspected that he may have died due to a fall from the launch. However, if family members file a complaint, a thorough investigation will be conducted, he added.
After the body was recovered, the matter was reported to Sutrapur Police Station in Dhaka, where the deceased resided, and the deceased's relatives were informed.

The body was sent to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy, said OC Mahbubur.
When contacted, ATM Shamsuzzaman’s daughter, Koyel Ahmed, told UNB that members of her family are currently on their way to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital to identify the body.
