Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) on Saturday paid homage to the late eminent writer, essayist, and distinguished educationist Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, a Bangla Academy awardee and Emeritus Professor of the English Department at Dhaka University.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Central Shaheed Minar at 11 am, where the Academy’s Secretary, Mohammad Wares Hossain, offered floral tributes. Officers and staff of the Academy were also present.
Earlier, the Academy’s Director General, Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed, popularly known as poet Rezauddin Stalin, attended the namaz-e-janaza at Dhaka University Central Mosque.
Expressing deep sorrow over Professor Islam’s demise, Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and all well-wishers, and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
The DG said Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam was not only an educationist but also a literary figure, free thinker, writer, storyteller, and essayist.

He served Dhaka University’s English Department for many years and held the position of Emeritus Professor. He wrote in a unique style beyond traditional storytelling and conducted significant research on Michael Madhusudan Dutta, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Shamsur Rahman, enriching Bangla literature immensely.
Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam passed away on Friday at 5:00 pm while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital in Dhaka.
