The Bangladesh Society of Calgary (BSC), Canada, has celebrated International Mother Language Day with profound respect and reverence, demonstrating their love for their mother tongue.
The event took place at the Renfrew Community Center in Calgary on Saturday, with around 250 attendees from various nationalities, including members of the Bangladeshi community residing in Calgary.
Artists from ten countries—Bangladesh, Canada, Russia, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, China, the Philippines, and Egypt—graced the event, performing songs and dances in their respective languages to mark the occasion of International Mother Language Day.

Through songs, dances, and poetry in their native tongues, the artists expressed the importance, sincerity, and love they have for their mother language, captivating the audience with their performances.
Jahangir Alam, Director of the Bangladesh Society of Calgary, emphasised the significance of the day, recalling the sacrifices made by the Bengali people on 21st February 1952 to preserve their right to speak in Bengali, their mother tongue.
A heartfelt tribute was paid to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement, and prayers were offered for the peace of their souls.
The event was conducted by Obaidur Rahman, with speeches and addresses delivered by Calgary Councillor Raj Dhaliwal, as well as prominent Bangladesh community leaders including Riaz Morshed, Hasan Abbas, Ali Ashraf Laskar, Al Imran Nikkan, Jamal Uddin, Mahbubul Hoque, Bipul Khan, Abu Sayed, and Nazneen Newaz, among others.

In 1999, UNESCO declared February 21st as International Mother Language Day to recognize this profound sacrifice.
