Advisor of the interim government for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has said that a committee will be formed to investigate irregularities and corruption in the power and energy sector.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters during his visit to the Rupsa 800 MW Combined Cycle power plant at Khalishpur in Khulna.
He also said this is a new Bangladesh where every one will get the equal opportunity. He noted that the board of directors of the state-owned power plants will be restructured.
The advisor, also for the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and Ministry of Railway said, "So far we heard a kind of narratives of development that our per capita income and GDP in Bangladesh is increasing and we are turning into a middle-income country from a low-income country. But it now appears that this was a mistake."
Pointing to the Rupsa power plant, he said this gas-based plant was built at a cost of Tk 8000 crore in Khulna. But now it is unlikely to generate electricity in near future due to lack of gas supply.
"We knew long ago that the gas reserve in Bangladesh will decrease and it will not be possible to supply gas to the power plant. Despite that Tk 8000 crore was spent to build this plant and the people will not get any benefit from it. This is the fallacy of development”, he said.
The adviser also said that development should be measured by how people's lives have improved.
He said the plant will require 140 MMCFD gas per day but there is only 100 MMCFD spare in Bhola which could be supplied to this plant. But that will not be enough for the power plant.
"Despite that we will try to partially generate power from this plant with limited capacity", he added.
Senior Secretary of Power Division Md. Habibur Rahman, Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division Md. Nurul Alam, Chairman (Acting) of Bangladesh Power Development Board Md. Rezaul Karim, Deputy Commissioner (Acting) Md. Yusup Ali of Khulna were present on the occasion.
