An inmate of Dhaka Central Jail died after suddenly falling ill on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The deceased was identified as Md Saiful Islam, 40, son of Azizul Haque and a resident of the Gachuabari area under Dhamrai Police Station.
Prison guard Md Belayet said Saiful fell sick in the afternoon. Following instructions from prison authorities, several guards took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to prison sources, Saiful had been imprisoned in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act with Dhamrai Police Station.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
A post-mortem will be conducted in the presence of an executive magistrate. After completion of the legal formalities, the body will be handed over to the family by the prison authorities, he added.
