Train movement on the Dhaka–Mymensingh railway route which remained suspended on Monday following the derailment of a train in Gafargaon upazila, resumed using an alternative route via Kishoreganj-bhairab route.
Railway officials said trains operating on the route are being diverted through the Kishoreganj–Bhairab railway line as an alternative.
The removed section of the rail line was restored at around 4:30pm on Monday, and the coaches of the derailed train were also recovered, said Mymensingh Railway Station Superintendent Abdullah Al Harun.
After the derailment of the intercity Agnibina Express, the Jamuna Express travelled to Dhaka in the morning via Bhairab in Kishoreganj as an alternative route.
The Jamalpur Express also departed Dhaka using the same route and is heading towards Jamalpur while the Mohanganj Express is currently on its way to Mymensingh.
However, all local trains operating on the Dhaka–Mymensingh–Jamalpur route have been cancelled.
Due to the suspension of the Dhaka–Mymensingh rail link, the intercity Agnibina Express on both the Dhaka–Tarakandi and Tarakandi–Dhaka routes, the Brahmaputra Express on the Dewanganj Bazar–Dhaka route and the Haor Express on the Mohanganj–Dhaka route have also been cancelled.
The rail line was made operational and the derailed coaches were recovered with the help of a rescue train at around 5:30pm, said Harun.
“Considering security concerns and the risk of further accidents, the Dhaka–Mymensingh route remains closed for now,” he said.
Earlier, train services on Dhaka–Mymensingh route have remained suspended since early Monday after two bogies of Agnibina Express derailed in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh district due to the removal of a portion of the railway tracks by miscreants.
No casualties were reported in the incident.
The derailment occurred around 5:10am as the Agnibina Express was travelling from Tarakandi Station towards Gafargaon Railway Station, said Mymensingh Station Master Hanif.
He said miscreants removed around 20 feet of the railway tracks, causing the train to derail.
Bangladesh Railway has requested passengers to log in online to claim refunds for cancelled tickets.
