Fire Service officials on Wednesday broke open the door of a chemical godown, locally known as Hazi Alam’s Chemical Godown, at Shialbari in Rupnagar Residential Area of capital’s Mirpur.
The door was broke open day after a devastating fire triggered by a powerful explosion swept through the chemical warehouse and a garment factory on Tuesday morning.
Fire Service officials said although the door has been opened, the stored chemicals are yet to be removed from the site.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell Station Officer Talha Bin Jasim said firefighters resumed rescue operations around 8am on Wednesday.
Mirpur fire: 16 bodies to be released from DMCH after identification
A five-member chemical expert team entered the godown around 11:30 am and broke open a locked door to access a section of it.
“They had to break the door for access. But no chemicals have been moved yet. The removal process will start soon,” Talha said.
He added that it remains unclear whether any bodies are still inside the chemical warehouse.
“During last night’s operation at the garment factory, 16 bodies were recovered. No more bodies were found afterward,” he said.
Police and fire officials are still trying to trace the owners of both the garment factory and the chemical godown.
