A 65-year-old village elder was beaten to death with a hammer during a local arbitration meeting (shaalish) over a land dispute at Balugram village in Magura Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Badsha Molya, a local matbar (elder) of Kuchiamora Union.
Magura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ayub Ali said the meeting was arranged to settle a longstanding land dispute between two groups. During the discussion, an altercation broke out, and members of one side attacked Badsha with a hammer, hitting him on the head several times and killing him on the spot.
Police sent the body to the hospital morgue for autopsy and filed a case over the incident. However, no arrests had been made as of filing this report.
Tension has been prevailing in the area following the killing, the OC added.
