The murder of Tarik Saif Mamun in Old Dhaka was the result of a long-standing feud between underworld rivals Imon and Mamun, said DB chief and Additional Commissioner of DMP Mohammad Shafiqul Islam on Wednesday.
Detectives arrested five people including two shooters over the killing of Mamun in broad daylight in Old Dhaka on Monday, he said at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre.
“During interrogation, the arrestees revealed that Rony, a former grocery shop owner from Kafrul who later turned into a top criminal and an associate of Imon, planned the killing spending Tk 2 lakh,” he added.
The arrestees are shooters Faruk and Robin, Yusuf, Rubel, and Shamim.
“Faruk and Robin were professional shooters directly involved in the killing. Two pistols used in the murder, and a motorcycle used in the operation were recovered,” the DB chief said.
Following the murder of Mamun, DB launched a shadow investigation after collecting and reviewing CCTV footages from the surrounding areas.
Based on intelligence information and footage analysis, the suspects were identified and arrested after conducting drivers in Sylhet Sadar, Narsingdi, and different parts of Dhaka on Tuesday, said Shafiqul.
Faruk, Robin, Shamim, and Rubel were arrested from Velanagar area under Narsingdi Sadar Police Station around 9:50 pm on Tuesday.
Law enforcers recovered Tk 1,53,640 in cash from Faruk and Robin, believed to be part of the payment given by the mastermind Rony.
Rony, known to be an associate of Imon, had previously attempted to kill Mamun several times before succeeding on November 10—the day Mamun was scheduled to appear in court.
Efforts are underway to locate and arrest Rony, he added.
