The 35-year-old wife Nasima Akter has desperately been searching for her husband Nazmul Alam, who has remained missing since a devastating fire broke out at a chemical warehouse and a garment factory in Mirpur’s Shialbari area on Tuesday.
Standing on a nearby street in tears, Nasima told reporters that her husband, originally from Kushtia, worked as a machine operator on the second floor of the factory.
“He called me after 11:30 a.m. and said there was a fire in their factory. Since then, I couldn’t reach him. I kept calling, but he didn’t respond,” she said.
After receiving the news, she rushed to the scene and later searched several nearby hospitals but could not find him.
Mirpur garment factory, chemical godown fire kills 9
Witnesses said the fire originated after a gas cylinder exploded around 11:40 a.m. in front of Shah Alam’s chemical warehouse, located opposite the RN Garments building. The blaze quickly spread to both the chemical warehouse and its opposite side location five-storey garment factory.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, nine bodies have been recovered from inside the garment factory so far, while efforts to douse the fire at the chemical warehouse were still underway at the time of filing this report.
