Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday said the government has already communicated with relevant international bodies in an effort to rescue hijacked ship MV Abdullah and the sailors safely.
The Piracy Reporting Center in Kuala Lumpur, Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), New Delhi, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the Singapore office under the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia have already been informed regarding the matter, he said.
Besides, the situation of the Bangladesh ship has also been reported to the ships of the UK, the USA, India and China operating in that area, he said.
The Minister came up with the updates when reporters asked about ship MV Abdullah and its crew members at the Dhaka University (DU) senate building in the capital.
He said the incident is very sad and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very concerned about this and the issue has been informally discussed in the Cabinet meeting.
Replying to another question, the Foreign Minister said that no 'formal' communication has been established with the pirates, communication is being done through other parties.
Intelligence agencies are working on it, the minister added.
Earlier, a ship of the same company was taken over by pirates. The ship and crew were rescued three months later.
Earlier, on the occasion of International Women's Day 2024, the Foreign Minister spoke at a seminar titled "Empowering Future: Invest in Women towards Smart Bangladesh."
He emphasised the development and welfare of women for the prosperity of the nation.
He said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's daughter Sheikh Hasina's government is dedicated to the development of the nation.
