A grandmother and her six-year-old granddaughter were killed when a speeding passenger bus crashed into them on Chandpur–Cumilla regional road in Hajiganj upazila of Chandpur district on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Nazma Begum, and granddaughter Marzia Begum, residents of Laxmipur village in Faridganj upazila of the same district.
According to police and witnesses, the Chandpur-bound bus of Padma Paribahan rammed into them while walking along the road in front of a hotel around 9:45pm, leaving them critically injured.
They were rushed to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Marzia dead on arrival and admitted her grandmother, they said.
The grandmother was later shifted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital and succumbed to her injures on the way around 11pm.
Officer-in-charge of Mohiuddin Faruq of Hajiganj Police Station said the bus was seized and the supervisor, who had been driving, was handed over to police after being detained by enraged locals.
The bodies were handed over to the family without autopsy as no case was filed, the OC added.
