The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting income income tax returns by one month until December 31.
The deadline extension was announced on Sunday through a special NBR order.
The previous deadline was 30th November.
In a separate directive, the tax authority also said that any taxpayer facing difficulties in filing returns online due to registration issues in the e-return system may apply to the deputy commissioner of taxes concerned with specific justification by December 15.
According to the NBR, online filing has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers this year, except for a few categories — senior citizens aged 65 or above, persons with physical disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Although these exempted groups are not required to submit online returns, they may still do so voluntarily.
Authorised representatives of taxpayers are also allowed to file e-returns on their behalf this year.
For Bangladeshis living abroad, online filing is not compulsory.
However, they can register for the e-return system by emailing their passport number, national identity card number, email address and other required information to [email protected].
The applicant will then receive an OTP and registration link via email, enabling them to complete the online filing process easily.
The NBR further stated that taxpayers can pay taxes conveniently from home without uploading any documents, simply by providing accurate information on income, expenditure, assets and liabilities in the e-return system.
Payments can be made through debit or credit cards, internet banking or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad.
Upon filing, taxpayers can instantly download the automated submission slip and print their income tax certificate using the system-generated information.
So far this year, more than 1.8 million taxpayers have submitted their income tax returns online, according to NBR.
