Incidents like hurling brickbats from inside the JPC and breaking open its gate by the JCD men are no way acceptable as chanting slogans on its club premises is prohibited as per conditions for holding any programme at the club, said a JPC media release.
On the other hand, it said, the entry of police personnel, firing teargas shells and charging baton inside the Press Club are also unfortunate as they are expected to behave responsibly under any circumstances.
The JPC managing committee held the emergency meeting on Tuesday with its JPC President Farida Yasmin in the chair to discuss the unwarranted situation created on the JPC premises following the JCD’s demonstration programme in front of the club as it put this national organisation and its members at extreme risk.
It was primarily known from some eyewitnesses and security guards that a large number of BNP supporters were already there inside the club premises in connection with a function of Zia Parishad held in a hall of the club, said the press release signed by JPC general secretary Elias Khan.
When the clash between JCD and police personnel broke out, they (BNP supporters) assisted the JCD activists to enter the club breaking open its main gate and then they altogether hurled brickbats at the police personnel from there.
In retaliation, the police lobbed teargas shells at the club premises and even charged baton entering inside, creating a sense of insecurity among the club members who were there.
Three members, including an official of the club managing committee, were injured as they came forward risking their lives so that the clash does not spread into the club building.
A committee has been formed to investigate the whole incident and the next steps will be taken based on its report so that such thing does not recur.
The club authorities neither want to ban nor control political programmes there but expect sensible behaviours from all concerned, the release added.
