The arrestee was identified as Mohammad Mahfuz Mollah, a resident of the Mangolpur village in the Lohagara area of Narail district.
The arrest occurred around 11am when the BGB personnel, acting on a tip-off, searched a passenger bus heading from Jashore to Benapole. Mahfuz was found hiding the gold bars, made of 24-carat gold, wrapped in a black cloth around his waist.
Later, he was arrested from the bus and recovered the gold bars worth over Tk 4.61 crore.
He was handed over to Benapole Port Police following the incident and a case was filed against him.
Lt. Col Saifullah Siddique, commander of the 49 BGB Battalion, said that there has been an effort to curb the smuggling of gold, drugs, and foreign currency at the Amrakali check post through enhanced intelligence operations and stricter inspections.
