A Faridpur court on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in 2018.
Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Shamima Parvin handed down the punishment.
The convict, Ahad Sheikh, is a resident of Saltha upazila in the district.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, Ahad married Rubaiya in 2015. The couple was blessed with a baby girl.
After three years of their marriage, Ahad demanded Tk 3 lakh as dowry to go to Saudi Arabia, but Rubaiya managed to provide Tk one lakh.
Ahad used to torture Rubaiya as she failed to provide the remaining amount. On August 1, 2018, Ahad beat his wife mercilessly over the issue, leaving her injured.
Later, he killed his wife by forcibly putting poison into her mouth.
Romesa Begum, Rubaiya’s mother, filed a case against five people, including Ahad, in this connection.
Police submitted a chargesheet against three people, including Ahad, on June 23, 2019.
After examining records and witnesses, the court also acquitted two others as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
