Traffic in Mandalpara area of Narayanganj town came to a standstill on Thursday morning as members of the Truck Owners Association staged a protest, blocking roads with vehicles in a bid to demand the release of one of their leaders.
Eyewitnesses reported that association leaders and workers brought trucks onto the road in a disorganized manner, completely halting vehicular movement. Protesters vowed to continue their demonstration until Shamim, the member secretary of the organization, is released.
Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, confirmed that Shamim was arrested early Thursday in connection with a murder case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement.
Meanwhile, Md Nasir, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station, said that efforts were underway to disperse the protesters, clarifying that no arrests had been made under his station’s jurisdiction.
