The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a new facility enabling Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad to file their income tax returns online with a greater ease and flexibility.
According to a special order issued by the NBR, online income tax return submission has been made mandatory this year for all individual taxpayers — except senior citizens aged 65 years and above, persons with disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
However, those exempted, including expatriate Bangladeshis, are still encouraged to use the e-return system due to its efficiency and convenience.
The NBR said that online tax return filing has gained significant popularity as taxpayers can instantly receive an automated acknowledgement slip and download their tax certificate without visiting tax offices or submitting paperwork.
To address a longstanding issue faced by expatriate Bangladeshis, the NBR has modified its registration process.
Previously, users had to receive a one-time password (OTP) on a Bangladeshi mobile number registered in their own name, which was difficult for those abroad.
Under the new arrangement, expatriate taxpayers can now receive the OTP directly via email.
For verification, taxpayers living abroad must email their passport number, national ID, visa page, email address and a recent photograph to [email protected].
Online tax returns cross 10 lakh, registrations over 16 lakh
After verification, the NBR will send an OTP and registration link, enabling them to complete registration and submit their income tax returns online from anywhere in the world.
As of now, over 850,000 taxpayers have already filed their returns online for the 2025–26 tax year.
The NBR has urged all eligible taxpayers, both at home and abroad, to file their income tax returns by 30 November 2025 using the e-return system.
