The minister came up with the information at a views exchange meeting with reporters on market monitoring at the ministry’s office.
He also warned that stern actions would be taken if anyone tries to destabilise market and take advantage of this situation and create artificial crisis.
“There’s enough rice reserve. So there’s no need for personal reserve for two or three months,” he said.
Government will not sit idle if businessmen or millers try to destabilise market. There is not only enough food reserve but also letter has been sent to millers as government will distribute them rice for open market sale (OMS).
At present, the government has reserve of 17.39 lakh metric tonnes of food grains which was 15.44 lakh metric tonnes last year, he added.
The minister said that real businessmen and millers should serve people.
He said the government will strengthen monitoring.
“There are 25 monitoring teams and the number will be increased if required. There are also monitoring cells of Commerce Ministry and Prime Minister,” he said.
When asked whether there will be any message to stop sale of excessive foods, he said. “Letters are being sent to home and commerce ministries, traders and FBCCI today,” he said.
“Exemplary punishment will be given if any unscrupulous businessman,” the minister said.
