A student was killed in Savar on Thursday in violent clashes involving students, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members, Jubo League, and Chhatra League activists during the ongoing nationwide ‘complete shutdown’in protest against attacks on students that resulted in at least 6deaths yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Yamin, 24, a student of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Mirpur.
Police ate trying to get details of the victim, said, Shah Zaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar police station.
Aaround 2 pm, some people including Yamin suffered bullet injuries in front of Mansoor Market of the bus stand.. Later, they were taken to a nearby private hospital where doctors declared Yamin dead.
Witnesses reported that hundreds of students from various schools and colleges assembled at the Pakiza area near the Savar bus stand on the Dhaka-Aricha highway from 11:00 am.
The situation turned violent with presence of police, BGB, and activists of Chhatra League and Jubo League, resulting in an exchange of brickbats.
Around 12:30 pm, Chhatra League and Jubo League members, led by Manjurul Alam Rajib, Chairman of the Savar Upazila Parishad and General Secretary of the Upazila Awami League, gathered in the Pakiza area, chanting slogans for promoting peace.
However, they retreated in the face of student resistance and police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets, prompting protesters to retaliate with brick chips.
As of 4 pm, the clash is going on near Savar bus stand on Dhaka-Aricha highway.
Over 100 students have been injured in the violent clashes since morning.
