In observation of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, a rally and human chain were held today at Rajshahi University, organized by YouthNet Global and Pure Earth Bangladesh with UNICEF's support.
The event aimed to raise awareness about lead pollution and urged the government to take stronger action against it.
Around 60 participants, including faculty, students, and local NGOs, gathered at noon, chanting, "Together, we can solve lead pollution." Speakers highlighted that Bangladesh ranks fourth globally in lead pollution, with about 60% of children exhibiting high blood lead levels, leading to severe health issues.
Concerns were raised about the economic impact of lead exposure, estimated at $28.6 billion annually. Common sources of lead include paint, ceramics, and recycled batteries.
The rally concluded with the distribution of leaflets promoting the theme "Bright Futures Begin Lead-Free," emphasizing the urgent need for action to protect public health.
