Non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) Rights Movement, based in Manchester, a city in the UK, is demanding its constituents' basic rights, including the right to vote and the opportunity to become members of parliament.
Chairman of NRB Rights Movement Barrister Mizanur Rahman demanded these while pressing nine points at a press conference in Manchester on Monday.
"We must have the right to vote. So that we can vote from abroad. This has been talked about for a long time but it has not been implemented," he said.
Although there is no bar as such on voting for NRBs, facilities provided for voting from abroad have often been inadequate during past elections. This has led to a movement that ensures their right to franchise is protected by the government.
Mizanur also said those who live abroad and have dual citizenship should also be given the opportunity to become members of parliament.

Mentioning that the children of NRBs who were born abroad are subjected to various harassments regarding their ancestral property in Bangladesh, he said they should be given that right so that they do not suffer from this harassment.
"Those who come from abroad should not be looked at differently, they should not be looked down upon, " he added.
Saying that respect should be shown to all overseas Bangladeshi citizen in every sector, he urged the government to form a separate tribunal to provide legal support in the foreign country.
Demanding the establishment of VVIP counter for overseas Bangladeshis, he said there should be a separate VVIP counter at the airport for Bangladeshi expatriates who come from different countries, so that they do not have to face any hassle when they come to Bangladesh.
"When the children of Bangladeshis first come to Bangladesh, they should be able to enter the country hassle-free, so that they can get a good idea of the country's environment," he added.
