Security arrangements have been tightened in and around the Savar National Memorial ahead of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s visit on Friday.
According to the schedule, following Jumma prayers, Tarique Rahman will visit the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman. Later, he is expected to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial.
Dhaka District Additional Superintendent of Police Arafatul Islam said security measures have been implemented along the approximately 23-kilometre highway from Dhaka to the memorial. “Plainclothes and uniformed personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order,” he added.
In addition to improving traffic management from Amin Bazar in Savar to the National Memorial, security forces are tasked with ensuring overall safety, including protecting lives and property.
Meanwhile, the monument authorities have urged visitors not to damage the memorial’s flower gardens while laying wreaths.
BNP Central Co-Secretary for Family Welfare and nominated candidate Dr. Dewan Mohammad Salauddin said there is immense enthusiasm among party leaders and activists ahead of Tarique Rahman’s visit. “We are expecting around 70,000 to 80,000 leaders, activists and supporters. Leaders and workers will also be present at various points along the Dhaka–Aricha highway,” he added.
Dr. Salauddin said several preparations have been made for the occasion, with instructions issued to the presidents and secretaries of each union and ward committee of BNP and its affiliated organizations. “Around 35,000 colorful caps and jerseys have been prepared to mark the return of the acting chairman to the country after 17 years and his visit to the National Memorial,” he said.
