The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Abdul Halim Sheikh, president of Ward No.15 unit of Dhanmondi Thana Sramik League, in connection with a murder case filed over a shooting during the anti-discrimination movement last year.
Halim’s involvement came to light during the investigation of the case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station. Later, a team of CID Dhaka Metro South arrested him from Mirpur Section-2 around 1:15am on Thursday, said CID’s Special Superintendent of Police (Media) Jasim Uddin Khan.
He said during primary interrogation, Halim admitted to being present at the scene of the shooting. He was found to have actively participated in the crackdown on protesters and was directly involved in firing at teenage demonstrators, he said.
During the movement, 14-year-old Abdullah Siddiq was shot dead on the spot. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The case also mentioned an attempt to conceal the victim’s body.
Following a complaint filed in court by anti-indiscrimination movement coordinator Faiyaz Ahmed Ratul, police registered the case with Dhanmondi Police Station.
Halim has been produced before court with a remand plea while efforts are underway to arrest other accused and uncover further details of the incident.
