At least 15 people, including a child, were injured in a stampede during a qulkhani (Quran recitation and condolence gathering) in Madhabdi area of Narsingdi Sadar on Friday.
The incident occurred after Friday prayers at Bhogirathpur village when large crowds gathered at the Bhogirathpur Haji Lal Mia Mollah High School field for the religious programme.
Locals said around 8,000 to 10,000 people assembled at the venue. As the school gate was opened after Jummah prayers, attendees rushed inside, triggering a sudden stampede at the entrance.
Among the injured are Abdul Mannan (60), Afaz Uddin (55), Kadir Mia (30), Suman Ahmed (25), Zakaria (15) and Ibrahim (5). The identities of the remaining injured could not be immediately confirmed.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, Madhabdi Prime Hospital and Madhabdi Popular Hospital for treatment. One critically injured patient was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Narsingdi Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Asma Jahan Sarkar said no official permission had been taken for organising the event at the school field. She added that she was not aware of the stampede incident.
Resident Medical Officer of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Dr Farida Gulshan Ara Kabir said four injured people were admitted to the hospital, and one of them was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
