The body of a student from Islamic University was recovered from a pond near Shah Azizur Rahman Hall on the campus Thursday evening.
The deceased was identified as Sajid Abdullah, a student of the 2021–22 academic session from the Department of Al-Quran and Islamic Studies. He was also a resident of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall.
According to campus sources, a group of students spotted Sajid's body floating in the pond and immediately informed the university’s proctorial body around 6:30pm.
Being informed, police—assisted by university officials and students—rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Sajid was initially taken to the Islamic University Central Hospital, where doctors referred him to Kushtia General Hospital. However, he was declared dead upon arrival.
Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of IU Police Station, said the body is currently being kept on campus. “We will send the body to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy if the family requests it,” he said, adding that the incident is under investigation.
A local shopkeeper, Akmal Hossain, who runs a store near the pond, said, “Around noon, I noticed something floating that looked like pants. I didn’t think much of it at the time.”
Sajid’s classmates have called on the university administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
