A full-fledged cancer hospital will soon be set up in Sylhet, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Sarwar Alam on Thursday.
He said once the hospital starts, cancer patients in Sylhet and nearby regions will no longer need to go to Dhaka or abroad for treatment.
“We expect the cancer hospital to begin its activities within the next three months,” he added.
The DC made the remarks after inspecting the under-construction cancer unit at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, along with Housing and Public Works Secretary Nazrul Islam and hospital authorities.
Sarwar Alam said that a team from the ministry visited to check two key issues - how far the construction has progressed and how long it will take to complete.
“We are hopeful that the hospital will be ready within three months,” he added.
Talking about Osmani Medical College Hospital, the DC said that steps are being taken to make the hospital free from brokers.
“Doctors and nurses are working with sincerity, but services are hampered due to the huge patient load,” he remarked.

The DC noted that although the hospital has manpower for 500 beds, it now serves around 3,000 patients.
He also said Osmani Hospital faces structural problems, including no proper sitting space for doctors, but assured that steps will be taken soon to fix them.
