State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat has stated that the government is committed to bringing everyone involved in the acts of violence and criminal activities related to the quota protest to justice.
He said this during a briefing to journalists of various international media outlets after inspecting the damage caused by recent vandalism and arson by miscreants at various installations, including the Dhaka centre and headquarters of the state broadcaster Bangladesh Television in Rampura, on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry Md Humayun Kabir Khondoker, Director General of Bangladesh Television Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, Additional Secretary of the ministry Tanmoy Das, and various officials of Bangladesh Television were present at the time.
During the briefing, the state minister said that a judicial investigation committee has been formed to investigate the incidents of violence surrounding the quota movement. The judicial investigation committee will thoroughly investigate and identify everyone involved in each incident. The government wants to bring everyone involved in acts of violence under punishment.
In response to a question from journalists, the state minister said that miscreants have attacked many government installations. Third parties infiltrated the students' movement and carried out these attacks. A judicial investigation committee has already been formed. The truth will come out through the investigation.
Regarding the violence at BTV, the state minister said that after inspecting the interior of BTV, it seemed like a battlefield. During the violence, BTV officials and employees made frantic calls to send more law enforcement to save their lives. Their lives were in grave danger. You have seen the nature of the attacks. They entered the building and set fires. We sent police forces, but they were not instructed to shoot. The government did not want more clashes, injuries, or loss of life. Even though our colleagues' lives were at risk, we showed extreme patience.
He said every incident of injury and loss of life is unfortunate and unexpected. On behalf of the government, we express deep sorrow for this. We were moving towards a peaceful solution. We repeatedly said that the students' demands on the streets were the same for which the government was fighting in court. We asked the students to be patient and not to be disappointed, hoping for a good outcome. Ultimately, you have seen that in the Supreme Court's verdict.
