Three former members of parliament (MPs) from Sherpur have been sued in separate cases over deaths of two students during the student movement on August 4, and an attack on a BNP leader’s rice mill.
Two murder cases have been filed against former MP Chanuar Hossain Chanu of the Sherpur-1 Constituency and former MP ADM Shahidul Islam of the Sherpur-3 Constituency. The cases also implicate 25 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, with an additional 300 to 400 unidentified individuals listed as suspects.
The cases were filed by the families of Mahbub Rana, a second-year student at Sherpur Government College who was run over by a government vehicle, and Sobuj, an HSC candidate at Sreebordi Government College, who was shot dead during the student movement.
Sherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Jahangir Alam confirmed the matter.
In a separate case, lodged at Sherpur Sadar Police Station, accusations of attack, vandalism, and theft have been made regarding the Roseberg Auto Rice Mill, owned by district BNP General Secretary Md. Hazrat Ali. The incident occurred during a protest, and the case was filed on August 15 by Md. Alamgir Hossain, an employee of the mill.
This case names former MP Chanuar Hossain Chanu, Fatema Tuz Zahura Shamoli—former reserved seat MP and president of the district Jubo Mohila League—former Awami League whip and district president Md. Atiur Rahman Atique, along with over 55 unnamed individuals.
The OC stated that the case involves more than 100 suspects, including the named individuals and various local leaders.
