The joy of new motherhood quickly turned to sorrow for Najmin Akhter, a housewife from Rangunia upazila of Chattogram. After giving birth to a healthy son in the morning, Najmin shared her happiness on Facebook, asking for blessings from friends and family. She tragically passed away that same night due to complications.
The heartbreaking news spread rapidly on social media. Despite being in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, Foreign Minister and lawmaker from Rangunia Dr Hasan Mahmud promptly directed his personal officer, Emrul Karim Rashed, to ensure the newborn's well-being and offered support to the grieving family.
On Wednesday afternoon, Emrul Karim Rashed on behalf of the Foreign Minister, visited Najmin's in-laws' residence in Chandraghona Ferry Ghat area. Accompanying him were newly elected Vice Chairman of Rangunia Upazila Parishad Shekhar Biswas, Upazila Awami League Office Secretary Abu Taher, Chandraghona Kadamtali Union Awami League President Md. Harun Saudagar, and other local Awami League leaders.
They presented gift items for the newborn from the foreign minister. Najmin’s husband, Md. Rimon, who had returned to Bangladesh after learning of his wife's death, expressed profound gratitude towards the Foreign Minister for his concern and assistance during this difficult time.
Najmin gave birth on June 11, but succumbed to complications that night. Rimon returned on June 12 and managed the funeral and other formalities for his wife. He thanked everyone who offered condolences and expressed particular gratitude to the Foreign Minister for his empathetic response.
Reflecting on his late wife’s wishes, Rimon shared, "She wanted to name our son Rihan if it was a boy. So, in honour of her wish, our son is named Rihan. My sister is now caring for him.”
