Detectives have arrested two identified armed criminals along with a foreign pistol and bullets during a raid in the New Town Bazar fish market area under Pallabi Police Station in the capital on Sunday night.
The arrestees were identified as Huda Mamun (40) and Orin (35).
Briefing reporters at DMP media centre in the city’s Minto Road on Sunday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner ( Mirpur Division) of Detective Branch (DB) under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mizanur Rahman said based on secret information, a DB team conducted an overnight operation on Sunday and arrested the duo from a secret room inside the market.
He said Mamun and Orin were prime members of an extortion and drug-dealing group led by expatriate gangster Moshiur Rahman Moshi. Their group had been terrorizing the Pallabi area, including Millat Bihari Camp, where a series of shootings over dominance and drug trade occurred from April 11 to 13, creating widespread panic among locals, DEC (DB-Mirpur) Mizanur added.
Upon interrogation, the duo admitted to possessing firearms used in the shootings’ incidents. Based on their information, police recovered a foreign revolver, two bullets, and 20 rounds of SMG ammunition reportedly looted during the post-July uprising.
Orin is accused in eight cases filed with different DMP police stations, while Mamun faces multiple cases under the Speedy Trial Act and the Narcotics Control Act.
Meanwhile, another group member, Sohel, was arrested with drugs on April 25 and is currently in jail. Legal proceedings against all arrestees are underway.
