A memorial meeting honouring the life and contributions of veteran politician and freedom fighter Mostafa Mohsin Montu was held on Wednesday at the National Press Club auditorium in the capital.
The event was organised by fellow combatants from the 1971 Liberation War, who described Montu as a steadfast comrade in both the battlefield and the democratic movement that followed.
Dr Kamal Hossain, the principal architect of Bangladesh’s 1972 Constitution, attended the event as the chief guest.
Eminent jurist and President of Gono Forum Dr Kamal said, “Mostofa Mohsin Montu was a courageous freedom fighter and a committed politician who upheld democratic values throughout his life. His passing is a great loss for the nation.”
“Montu Bhai always stood against injustice,” he added. “His life of struggle and principle will remain a source of inspiration for future generations.”
Among other speakers and guests were freedom fighters Captain Shahabuddin Shahab (Bir Uttam), Dr Abdullah Al Mahmud (Bir Protik), Nurul Ambia, Advocate ZI Khan Panna, Major (Retd) Nasir Uddin, naval commando Anil Baran Roy, Mahbub Zaman, Selim Mahmud, senior journalists Abu Sayeed Khan, MA Aziz, and Masud Kamal, as well as senior advocate and freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman.
Professor MM Akash also spoke at the event.
Speakers also said Liberation War, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Joy Bangla are the pride of Bangladesh. Those who attempted to erase the history will be vanished one day, said valiant freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman.
He also said the position and honour of Bangalee was established though the victory in the Liberation War.
" Today you are enjoying the post of the General of the Army, Commissioner of the Police or highest ranks in the other jobs. This situation would be different if freedom fighters did not sacrifice their lives," he added.
The meeting was presided over by freedom fighter Md Shafiqul Rahman Shahid, former commander of the Dhaka Metropolitan Unit of the Muktijoddha Sangsad, while fellow freedom fighter Mohiuddin Haider Khoka moderated the session.
