The deceased was identified as Masud Rana, 30. The cause of his death is still unclear.
Masud’s family members alleged that he was picked up from Kanchpur under Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj district on Tuesday noon and then he was kept inside the custody of Paltan Police Station. They claimed that the youth was tortured to death.
Contacted, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Walid said Paltan police held Masud with 300 Yaba pills in the afternoon on Tuesday and took him to the police station.
He said they suspect that Masud was a drug addict.
“At the police station, Masud became restless and fell down there. He also received injuries in his head,” Walid claimed.
Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 10:30pm.
However, Abdul Mannan, father in-law of the youth, said police detained Masud Rana in front of Sinha Textile Mill in Kanchpur area on Tuesday noon. “Later, I came to know he was taken to Paltan Police Station.”
Mannan said he contacted a member of Paltan Police Station over phone, but he was not allowed to talk to him. “Later, I got information that Masud was taken to DMCH as he fell sick.”
He said Masud was a worker of Faisal Rolling Mill situated in Jatramura area of Kanchpur.
Mannan said Masud had been living at Kanchpur with his wife and two daughters.
