Tropical Storm Gil intensified into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday, but forecasters say it is not expected to impact any land areas.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Gil was located roughly 1,080 miles (1,740 kilometers) west-southwest of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
The hurricane had sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at a speed of 20 mph (31 kph).
No coastal warnings or watches have been issued, and the storm is predicted to continue its west-northwest path in the coming days.
Gil’s development comes during an active stretch for Pacific storms. Another system, Iona, which had previously reached hurricane status, has now weakened to a tropical depression as it moves far west of Hawaii—also posing no threat to land.
Forecasters noted that additional storms may form soon in the eastern Pacific.
