Sarjis Alam, Chief Organiser (North) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that the party may form an alliance with others only on the basis of strong commitment.
Speaking to journalists after a coordination meeting of the NCP in Manikganj on Monday evening, he said, “The NCP has not yet decided whether it will form an alliance with any party. But if it does, it will be with those who remain firm in their stance against the Awami League and Indian influence, and who will work for the country’s interest.”
He said, “If we form any alliance, it will be with those who are committed to implementing the reforms of the July Charter, ensuring justice in the future Bangladesh, and working for the security and rehabilitation of the families of martyrs and July fighters.”
When asked about the upcoming February elections, Sarjis Alam said, “If the Election Commission can prove that it will remain neutral and independent, the NCP has no problem taking part in the elections.”
Regarding the party’s election symbol, he said that there is no legal obstacle to getting the Shapla (water lily) symbol. Including or canceling the symbol is the Election Commission’s job.
“But if they act unfairly, we will take to the streets to protest. We are confident we will get the Shapla symbol and We will vote with this symbol,” he reiterated.
He also alleged that the Election Commission is being influenced by certain individuals, institutions, or political parties. “They have failed to maintain independence and neutrality. They are discriminating against the NCP. We will not accept this discrimination in post-revolutionary Bangladesh,” he said.
