Tawhid Hridoy is likely to be named captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club for the remainder of the Dhaka Premier League season, as veteran opener Tamim Iqbal continues his recovery following a recent health scare and his return to cricket remaining uncertain.
Team manager Sazzad Ahmed confirmed the media on Friday that the young batter is being seriously considered for the leadership role, with a final decision expected ahead of their upcoming match against Prime Bank Cricket Club on April 6.
“So far, Tawhid Hridoy has a great chance. He has led the team in a couple of matches when Tamim was unavailable, so he’s a strong candidate. But it’s the club’s decision. The club will let us know,” Sazzad told reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Hridoy, known for his composure and maturity on the field, has already served as acting captain in Tamim’s absence earlier this season, impressing the management with his leadership.
Tamim Iqbal, one of Bangladesh's most celebrated cricketers, was hospitalised on March 24 after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match at BKSP.
He underwent an emergency stenting procedure after a blockage was discovered in his artery. After spending several days under observation at a specialised hospital, Tamim returned home on March 28. Doctors have advised him to take at least three months' rest before considering a return to competitive cricket.
With Tamim unavailable for the remainder of the league season, Mohammedan now find themselves needing a steady hand at the helm. At just 24 years old, Hridoy’s consistent performances in both domestic and international cricket, coupled with his leadership potential, make him a logical choice for the role during this critical phase of the tournament.
