Kylian Mbappé equaled a long-standing Real Madrid record on Saturday after scoring his 59th goal of 2025, matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s mark for the most goals in a single year for the club.
The French forward sealed Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Sevilla with a late penalty, converting from the spot four minutes from time in the team’s final match of the year. The goal came just in time, as the milestone appeared to be slipping away.
Celebrating his 27th birthday, Mbappé reached the same total Ronaldo set in 2013. He marked the achievement with a muted version of Ronaldo’s iconic celebration before sending a kiss toward the cameras. Mbappé has scored 29 goals for Madrid this season, including a league-high 18.
Calling Ronaldo his “idol,” Mbappé said matching the Portuguese star’s record in his first full year at the club was special. He added that the celebration was a tribute to Ronaldo, crediting him for helping ease his transition to Madrid.
Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a header in the 38th minute, while Sevilla defender Marcao was sent off for a second booking with 20 minutes remaining. Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda was also dismissed at halftime for protesting a refereeing decision.
Madrid coach Alonso had been under pressure following poor results, but the win offered some relief. Despite Sevilla playing with 10 men, the visitors created several chances, forcing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into multiple second-half saves. The match remained tense until Mbappé’s penalty after Juanlu fouled Rodrygo.
