Heathrow Airport gradually resumed operations late Friday, nearly 18 hours after a fire at an electrical substation caused a power outage, halting flights at Europe’s busiest airport and stranding 200,000 passengers.
A British Airways flight landed just before sunset following the airport’s decision to lift the closure order, which had disrupted global travel. Other arrivals followed, including a short-haul flight from Manchester.
The first departure took place later in the evening, as the British government temporarily eased restrictions on overnight flights to help clear the backlog.
