The Pentagon has announced it is ending all military training, fellowship and certificate programs with Harvard University, citing differences over ideology.
In a statement on Friday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Harvard no longer meets the needs of the US military. He accused the Ivy League university of promoting what he described as “globalist and radical ideologies.”
“Harvard is woke; the War Department is not,” Hegseth wrote in a separate post on social media.
Under the decision, the Pentagon will stop sending military personnel to Harvard for graduate-level education starting from the 2026–27 academic year. Those currently enrolled will be allowed to complete their courses. Similar programs at other Ivy League universities will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
The move comes amid an ongoing dispute between the Trump administration and Harvard over government demands for reforms at the university. The administration has already cut billions of dollars in federal research funding and sought to restrict Harvard’s ability to enroll foreign students.
The White House says the actions are linked to concerns over anti-Jewish bias on campus, while Harvard argues it is being punished for refusing to follow the administration’s political views. The university has filed lawsuits challenging the measures, and court rulings so far have favored Harvard.
