A 52-year-old man was arrested in a case filed over the attempted rape of a five-year-old girl in Narayanganj’s Fatullah on Thursday.
The arrestee was identified as Amanullah, said Fatullah Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Anwar Hossain.
Before handing him over to the police, locals beat him up, said the police official.
Police detained Amanullah earlier in the day, he was shown arrested after the victim's father filed a case in the afternoon.
Earlier, around 11pm on Wednesday, Amanullah, a tenant of the same house, took the 5-year-old child into his house and attempted to rape her. When the child screamed, tenants from a nearby house rushed to the scene, caught Amanullah, and beat him up.
After hearing about the incident, Amanullah’s son-in-law, BNP leader Hossain, along with another BNP leader, tried to resolve the matter.
However, when the incident was reported to the police, Fatullah police arrived at the scene around 1 am and took Amanullah to the police station.
