Human rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has condemned the refusal of parole for Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League, preventing him from attending the funeral of his wife and nine-month-old child. Saddam, an under-trial prisoner in Jessore Central Jail, was only allowed a five-minute viewing of the bodies at the prison gate.

ASK said the denial violated Bangladesh’s Constitution, the 2016 Ministry of Home Affairs parole policy, and international human rights law, including the ICCPR. The organization called the act “arbitrary and inhumane” and urged transparency and accountability from prison authorities.
ASK Chairperson Z.I. Khan Panna noted the High Court could take suo motu action, emphasizing that such administrative decisions undermine democratic and human rights principles.
